Longtown Primestock Sale Report
C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 6,218 sheep comprising of 4,012 prime hoggs and 2,206 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 20th April 2023.
A pleasant entry of cast cows and bulls were forward, with additional buyers at ringside and recent rates easily maintained. More numbers can be handled with ease on a weekly basis here at Longtown. The sale peaked at £1,920 for an Ayrshire from J Barr, Clochkeil, Campbeltown with Whitebred Shorthorns to £1,756 shown by G Bell & Co., Bloch, Langholm. Hereford cows topped at £1,746 and £1,657 from A Mclean, Killeonan, Campbeltown with Holsteins to £1,343 consigned by J Pirie, Machrihanish, Campbeltown.
Top per kilo of 224p for Herefords from Killeonan, who sold others at 217p and Simmentals at 189p. Ayrshires to 192p from Clochkeil and Whitebreds to 182p from Bloch.

A smaller and seriously mixy show of 4,012 prime hoggs were forward with all classes maintaining last weeks high rates of return. All well finished hoggs were in big demand whilst storey types proved harder to sell.

A smaller and very mixy show of 2,206 cast ewes and rams forward all classes competitively bid for with heavy ewes in short supply and numbers are wanted for next week’s sale.
Texel ewes topped at £250 from DJ Wilson, Jubilee Farm, North Yorkshire who’s run of heavy continental ewes averaged £205, with a total of 214 ewes breaching £200.
Hill ewes to £114 for Blackfaces from GM & C Walton, Allensgreen, Bardon Mill with Cheviots to £110 from J Common & Son, Crossdykes, Corrie.
Rams sold to £200 for Charollais from AC Clark, Fineview, Glenluce.
Once again cast ewes and prime hoggs were consigned to Longtown from all corners of the British Isles, from Northern Ireland, Cheshire, Lincoln the northern counties, Argyll, Aberdeenshire, Thurso and Caithness all to take full advantage of the most competitive ring of buyers in the country.
