and Dumfriesshire Farmers` Mart P.L.C. had 115 prime cattle, 16
young bulls, 6,271 prime lambs and 2,315 cast ewes & rams forward
at their weekly sale on Thursday 12th December 2002.
The annual Xmas fatstock show of cattle was overseen by Jim Holden
of Kepak UK, Preston who had before him one of the best shows seen
at this centre, a credit to all vendors.
The overall championship was won by W.L. Musgrave & Sons,
Cardew Hall with their outstanding Limousin cross heifer which was
purchased at 210p (555kg) by Wm. Kirkup (Butcher), Longtown.
The reserve champion, a Limousin cross bullock shown by R. Prentice,
South East Longridge Farm which realised 155p (545kg) and purchased
by Mr Eastwood, Wholesale Butcher, Shaw, Nr Oldham.
The best British breed section was won by Messrs C.G. & M.
Noble, Demesne, Bewcastle and purchased by Wm. Kirkup, (Butcher),
Longtown with a Galloway at 120p (565kg).
Other leading prices were 132p for a Belgian Blue cross heifer
from E. & P. Lawson, High Boonwood Farm to Eastwoods of Shaw,
Oldham, other Belgian Blue heifers to 121.5p from R. Prentice, South
East Longridge to Mr Eastwood, who also paid 131p for a Limousin
cross bullock from South East Longridge. Messrs A.B. & H. Murray,
Sarkside sold a Belgian Blue cross bullock at 130p (645kg) to R.
& G. Moor, Roberton.
First prize young bull was a Limousin cross at 108.5p (650kg) from
Messrs MacDonald, Ladyhousesteads and purchased by Messrs Jewitt,
Spennymoor.

1,075 lightweight euro lambs were also forward in larger numbers
and were sadly cheaper averaging 87.5p per kilo overall and selling
to 109.5p for Cheviots from Rannagulzion Farms, Glenshee. Cheviot

A fantastic quality show of 900 lambs were judged by Mr Jim Holden
of Kepak UK, Preston who awarded the championship for the ninth
time in succession to R. Hall & Son, Inglewood Edge for their
20 Beltex cross lambs which later sold at £76 per head to
Mr M. Eastwood, Oldham, reserve champion was B.K. Ryker of Newton
Farm with his pen of Texel cross lambs.
